Courage Over Comfort

Scripture (ESV): “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9

Every great move of God begins with a command to step out of comfort. Joshua had spent years as Moses’ assistant, but when Moses died, leadership shifted to him. The weight was heavy. He had to lead Israel across the Jordan into a land filled with giants and fortified cities. Comfort would have told Joshua to stay safe on the east side of the Jordan. Courage called him to cross.

We often face the same tension. Comfort says, Play it safe. Don’t risk rejection. Don’t stretch too far. Courage whispers, Step out. God is with you. The promise of Joshua 1:9 isn’t that the path will be easy—it’s that God’s presence will be constant.

Fear doesn’t disqualify you; refusing to move does. Courage is not the absence of fear but the decision to obey God in the face of fear. Every breakthrough requires courage: the courage to forgive, the courage to apply, the courage to speak up, the courage to say yes—or sometimes no.

Think about Peter stepping out of the boat. Eleven disciples clung to comfort, but only one knew what it felt like to walk on water. What’s your “boat”? Where are you choosing safety over obedience?

Comfort is a cage that feels safe but keeps you small. Courage opens the door. God will not always make the path clear before you move—sometimes He reveals the miracle only after your foot touches the water.

Prayer:
“God of Joshua, I confess my tendency to cling to comfort. Fill me with courage today. Remind me that Your presence is greater than my fear. Help me obey You even when I don’t see the full picture.”

Next Step:
Do one thing today you’ve been delaying out of fear—make the call, send the message, take the step. Trust God’s presence to meet you in motion.
